So, I still haven’t written about our big purchase. Last Friday, after work, G tossed me in the car and said we were going to reconnaissance shop for a new vehicle.

Okay, time for back history. I bought my very first car back in 1988 and have had her all this time. G bought a 1984 used Honda 6 or 7 years ago. Both cars have a million little things wrong with them. Oddly, they have completely different things that are broken. If I had the magical ability to merge the working parts of both vehicles, we would still have a very unique and working car. But, both cars have enough vital things wrong to make them unreliable and unsuitable for long distance driving. Since I am a bicycle commuter except when we do “family things” and large grocery shopping excursions, I could have lived quite happily without a car for a long time. But, when we do use the car, it is usually for trips that must haul people and stuff for hours. Both cars were quite unstable for this task. So, we decided to purchase a used vehicle that we could run into the ground for the next 10-15 years.

Ideally, we would have liked to buy a hybrid or a really economic vehicle with alternative fuel, but we had a difficult time finding them used and within our price range. They are just too new. I wanted a 5 door car for practicality and functionality. G was just happy to find one that has suspension and doesn’t leak in the winter. We ended up with a Subaru wagon. We are very pleased. G has nice seats, a radio that works and a reliable car. I have a utility vehicle that can haul lumber, landscaping materials and large canvases. We are both happy. We even managed to trade in our existing vehicles, though that didn’t get us much, old as they were.

So now we have a newer car that should last us another decade. By the time we are ready for another, hopefully the world will be using better fuels and more economical cars than today’s mainstream. While we couldn’t afford the right car for the environment, at least I take solace in knowing how infrequently I use it and that when I need her, she is reliably there for myself and my family.

Autoed!

So now Michael and I will get off our lazy butts, buy bikes and park our car as much as we can. Your car gets much better gas mileage than ours so can we bum rides off of you? lol...I think you picked a great vehicle. I've heard wonderful things of the Subaru Wagons.

I go to look at bicycles today. I'll let you know how it goes.

Have fun! Let me know how you make out. I am off at 6pm tonight.

We have Stargate tomorrow, right? I work 'til 6 Saturday as well, so I'll be there as soon as I can.

Re: Autoed!

Much appreciated. I closed today at work and didn't leave until around 20 past. You know, all of us kept telling our patrons that we were closing and they needed to wrap things up, but it takes a while to finish with customers. I'll be there asap.
