I've been manicuring my lawn with a combination of push mower and electric rechargeable weed whacker since I bought my home 9 years ago. Last summer I had custody of my Mom's electric corded lawnmower. It changed how I regard lawn maintenance.
I actually enjoy going for long walks in my small yard pushing my mower and weeding. I enjoy spending time on the deck when I've finished with a glass of water admiring my work. It's so utterly tangible and such instant gratification that I feel naught but happiness at a job well done. The only sticking point is when I can't get to the lawn for several days or maybe even a week or two. In between my busy schedule or my time out of town, the grass and weeds don't seem to slow for me. They just keep growing. Then, when I try to mow with the push mower, it just pushes the grass down instead of cutting it because it's so long. This leads to a thorough week whacking of the lawn which takes a few days because the batter on the whacker only last 1/2 hour at a time and takes overnight to charge.
Last night, I bought an electric cordless lawnmower of my own. I caved. As much as I'd like to think I can be on top of the grass, my lifestyle repeatedly reminds me otherwise. Today, I was able to manicure the entire lawn, front and back, in the time it usually takes me to weed whack a third of it. It's definitely a concession. I'm not happy about adding another rechargeable energy sucker into the world, yet I feel it's less energy than 3 days of weed whacking. Plus, there's a plethora of time left in my day. Yay to that.
Next: staining the deck. Maybe tomorrow. Maybe later this month, when I'm more certain it won't rain within that 24 hours.
