Today is July 4th. I had an appointment this morning. An actual appointment. With a doctor. I’ve never had an appointment on July 4th in my life. In the US, it just isn’t done. I might have a date, or an engagement, but never an appointment. I was quite shocked when the doctor handed the little appointment card to me with July 4th written on it. Shocked, I say. I still am. I keep waiting to hear fireworks in the distance. So far, all I’ve heard is the water heater banging when I try to coax hot water from the tap. It’s all just a bit surreal for me.

It's funny isn't it? To realise that the day that's big in one place isn't huge anywhere else. I'm sure there's Americans throughout Sydney having a celebration.

I'd love to organise fireworks but our stupid government banned them years ago :)

I'm rather on the governments side on this... much as that phrase pains me. I have seen too many mishaps in the U.S.

I actually really think the Australian organized fireworks displays are better for it. They are full and fun and much more spactacular than the ones in the U.S. I was very impressed.

I'm still a country girl at heart, I miss the bonfires in the paddocks, all family and friends getting together for food and then fireworks at night. The next morning looking for the parachutes from the crackers. I hate that kids nowadays miss out on all this.

I love the big spectacles, but they don't have the personal feel.

I was raised in a city. My real home is more in the country than life in Sydney, and I miss that. Back home, we actually have barbeques and fun gatherings. People drive out to the country and blow things into oblivion. While I don't partake in the blowing up of things, I love the more homey atmosphere. I miss that with my soul.

How's married life treating you?

I'm loving it. Just the simple stuff like saying "my husband" etc. The day itself was so full that I need to sit down and think about all that happened. I'm going to journal it tomorrow.

I'm lucky that in moving to the city area, I found myself a great group of friends that are very "country" so I still have that base around me. We do the BBQ's and go 4-wheel driving to the bush and set stuff on fire and blow things up :)

I am looking forward to going back to my wonderful lifestyle. I really miss all the socializing and the companionship. Life in this big city is very isolating and lonely.

I'm glad to hear you're enjoying the married life. With the right person, it's great fun. I look forward to reading of your marital exploits.

"No boom today. Boom tomorrow. Always a boom tomorrow." Ivanova, Babylon 5.

That's one of my alltime favorite scifi quotes. Mayhap we should save some fireworks for your return?

I recall one July 4th spent in Seaside where we all had to dig trenches on the beach because all the other tourists had illegal fireworks. Talk about rocket's red glare...

I love Ivanova. She was one of my favourite characters.

Actually, I'm not much of a personal fireworks person. They make me nervous. I've seen too many people, alcohol or not, blow themselves or their kids into the emergency room. I feel better watching from a distance.

welcome back..

Still want to find a time to meet up. this week is good since I am between assignments.. how does somewhere in the city sound?

From: [identity profile] miladycarol.livejournal.com

This week and next are pretty much impossible. I'm also trying to tie up loose ends here and pack the house so we can leave in the next month. I'm not sure when I'll have an afternoon. It's been a very busy time. Sorry it's been so hard for us to manage a meeting.
