Yesterday, we had adventures in bedding. When we were here last time, G and I bought a really supportive queen mattress. When his family moved, they took that queen and put it between his their box spring and mattress to conserve space. They slept on the top layer. The mattress was so old it was concave in the centre. When we returned, we insisted it would be easier to take the mattress so old it folded in half to fit in the van. We made it sound like a favour. This leaves his elderly parents with a good mattress for sleeping. I feel really good about that.

The down side is that we've been sleeping on that old mattress. After 4 weeks, my back was creaking, popping and in spasm upper, mid and lower back. I had a talk with G and we decided to figure out something. We really didn't want to buy another big mattress that would need to be moved and stored every time we leave and arrive. Plus, if his parents move when we're not here, then they are stuck shifting and carrying it. But after 4 weeks of sleeping on cheap hotel and youth hostel beds, my back felt better. Are you sensing the irony, here? Three days after returning to the old mattress, I hadn't slept two of the nights and my back was sore and creaking again. Something needed to be done. We decided to go to bedding stores and see if they had any inexpensive futons or foam mats we could lay on the floor. In the final shop, a very nice salesman took us through and eventually started showing us actual mattresses. G wanted to try them and I kept insisting we didn't have the space for a real mattress. We kept looking until the man showed us the two mattresses he had in the back that we could buy and sleep upon that very night. G absolutely fell in love with one of them -- the hugely expensive temurpaedic foam mattress. Two things clicked in my brain:
1. It's a nice mattress, but we still have the storage issue and imposing upon his parents.
2. G has that look in his eyes. It's a look that means he really wants it and will agree to anything, so I had better play "bad cop" and see if I can lessen the financial blow.

The original price was AU$1500 on sale. I spent the next 20 minutes insisting the space issue and burden to his parents was too great and we should buy the $90 foam pad, instead. Gradually, the price fell to $930 from where he would budge no further. At that point, I gave in to G's pleas for the bed, or we may have been there all night. G was so pleased with his purchase, he began to gloat on the trip home about the amazing deal HE had gotten on the bed. Then I asked how he liked my performance. Performance? I may be nominated for an acting award, for my very own husband didn't know what I was doing. *shakes head* Then he was very proud and pleased with my efforts. Honestly, there was no way G was leaving without that mattress. He's always wanted one. I just saved him $600, that's all. *pleased grin*
Go Team Tran!

Of course, we still will have to deal with the storage issue and imposing upon his parents. We have no intention of telling them about it until we are leaving AU. They would not be pleased and they would want to keep the old mattress. *boggles* We will be going to the dump to retire it for good in the coming days.

Just tell them what an excellent deal you got on it -- that you practically stole the thing out from under the salesman's nose. Of course, you wren't looking for a mattress at the time....
