Today, we returned to the Jenolan Caves for the Plughole Adventure Tour. This involved us donning overalls, climbing garters, hard hats and light packs. We were bussed to the summit, abseiled down the mouth of a sinkhole, then began crawling, crabbing, butt-sliding, shimmying and snaking our way through gaping caverns and tiny holes that looked entirely too small for my massive butt to manage. Yet, somehow, I was able to swallow my doubt and fear and make it through to the other side.
My natural worry-ful nature is a tremendous obstacle in my life. My mom and the Catholic Church did an excellent job of cultivating fear and I managed to make an art form of it. It's taken me 3.5 decades to quell it to a dull roar so I may simply carry on with life. My gut was churning the whole way through the cave. Although I found my body physically able to handle the challenge, I needed to continually work through my breathing to prevent hyperventilation. what a sad, sad, soul I am. But, I managed and prevailed. In about the same way I managed jumping off a French Alp mountain with only an over-glorified kite strapped to my back. I'm scared silly, yet I do these things all the same. I wonder what psychosis that indicates. Hmmmm...
On a brighter note, my plump, lazy American arse isn't too big for spelunking. Yay that!
After the cave adventure, we zoomed off to Katoomba for a relaxing massage followed by dinner. G has been jonesing for pizza and we found one with a corn-based, gluten-free crust. *gasp!* I splurged and treated myself to a veggie, gluten-free pizza, hold the dairy. Yay for that, as well! Such luxury!
Cultural note: Many Au restaurants allow customers to bring their own wine. While this is done in America, here most restaurants charge a "corkage fee" of $2.50 to $5. Beer is usually not allowed, just wine.
Knee Report: Outside of the cartilage problem still healing, I declare (in light of today's utter abuse to my body) my sprained knee is fully recovered. Woo hoo!
Quote of the day (heard at sporting event covered on the radio): "Aussie! Aussie! Aussie! Oy! Oy! Oy!"
