Last week I boiled some water, mixed in a fistful of sea salt. I cut the bottom off one of Flex’s plastic gallon milk jugs to form a funnel, picked up my pitcher of hot salt water and a garden shear and tramped off to the corners of my yard where the wild blackberry brambles poke through the earth. I cut them back to nubs, centered the funnel around them and poured some water on it.

I believe the blackberry is the Oregon state weed. I love to pick the berries from the many wild growths that crop up everywhere, but I don’t want them in my yard. They are hurtful to me when I manicure the lawn and they ensnare my puppies in their thorny arms, dastardly plants that they are.

So, I’ve salted the earth.

And it’s working. It is only in a very concentrated spot around the stem and root of the unwanted plant. All the other foliage around it seems unaffected. I feel all Eve-in-the-Garden-of-Eden-like. I’m on the look out for snakes, but I think it’ll be okay because I haven’t any apple trees. *grins wickedly*

In other news: another big cauldron of tomato sauce is simmering on the stove containing many herbs from my little garden. *beams with pride*

Sheesh...what I wouldn't give for the following...

A) to smell the pot of sauce on your stove
B)sit at your table over tea
C)Pet the puppies
D)hug you

WOW....I'm surprised you didn't scorch the earth behind you. The Soviet Grand Army has nothing on you.

Hee hee... no, no scorching. I love my yard. I'm trying to preserve the integrity of it, not lay waste to it. *grins*

I would love to have you over for dinner and tea. I have a pot of meat sauce and a pot of veggie marinara sauce so you could both enjoy it. Of course, the puppy petting and Carol hugging is mandatory. *wink and giggle* Miss you!

LOL I'm amused at this post, because my husband is out nightly recently frantically trying to SAVE our blackberry plants from the rampantly evil Chinese Honeysuckle that is trying to take over our woods.

I miss the Oregon state weed. (I've been yelled at for describing the lengths we went to kill blackberries off in the Seattle area to people out here!)

I remember, back in RI, the red and black raspberry patch at my neighbor's house. When they would take summer vacations it was my job to keep their garden alive. Part of my payment was all the ripe fruit and veggies while they were gone. I used to sit and eat the raspberries with glee. I cultivated it and twine their delicate, fuzzy vines around the support structure but never once do I remember it as being a pesky weed that grew out of control. I strongly suspect the blackberries here have magical Jack and the Beanstalk qualities. They seem to grow magically out of the ground and, if you blink, become 3/4" in diameter at the base. Gah! Blackberries are still nice, but they are far nicer on someone else's patch of land.

On the other hand, I tried to grow honeysuckle here and failed. I remember a patch of honeysuckle at another neighbor's house that was so yummy! I loved walking by it because it smelled devine and the nectar was so sweet. *shakes head in amusement.
