Today George and I explored Bondi Beach. We took the train and walked all over the place. Yesterday, we went to the local Borders bookstore and I looked up a bunch of Vegetarian friendly restaurants, tea shops and organic markets. There were three markets and one tea shop in Bondi Beach so we hit them all.

The tea shop was actually in the bottom floor food court of an overpriced, upscale department store. There were some looseleaf teas there, but nothing really special, and the thought of trying to relax into a cup of tea while shoppers are bustling around and employees are racing down for their 15 minute lunch break… well, it hardly seemed worth the price, so we left.

Next we hit a very cramped, Kiva-like organic food store. It was the best one in Sydney so far. They had a lot of bulk supplies and a few familiar names. It’s so sad, really, seeing an item I can buy in Eugene for under a dollar with an Australian price of $4.50. *sigh* I just wish I could manifest my favourite foods and goods without going through customs.

Anyway, the store also had a little café attached that reminded me a lot of the old Morning Glory. The space was cramped, the food excellent and bountiful, and the service was kind. The store, however, truly lacked dreadlocks, tie-dyes and hemp clothes. These patrons are all yuppies. You know, I really miss the scent of Nag Champa. It’s so Eugeney.

The next stop was another organic grocer that was on the way to the beach. The store itself was less well stocked, but the one thing this store had that I have not seen in Australia yet was Rooibos tea. WOO HOO! There were four blends, a spicy cinnamon one which is quite out of the question for me, the Earl Grey, which is okay, but there were two other varieties that I had not heard of before… Caramel and Mango. They are quite reasonably priced at $55/kilo. Savouré sells one pound for about $22. A kilo is roughly two pounds, so, with the exchange rate, this store in Bondi is actually a tad cheaper. Things are definitely looking up.

Next, we stopped at the beach. Now, there, more things were looking up. It appears that in Australia, women may go topless on the beaches. And they do. Again, it’s almost like being at Country Fair at home… only without the cool body paints and fairy wings.

So, George and I spent a while enjoying the scenery at the beach, then we went in search of our final grocer. This one was even smaller than the previous one and had far less stock. It would do in a pinch, but not worth going out of my way. I did, however, notice a vegetarian restaurant across the street from it. It was already getting past 7pm and I had promised to have George back for his Mom to cook him supper, so we didn’t stop to look.

Overall, the day was quite nice. I found more resources, had great views of the ocean and the beach and all the lovely fauna that comes with it. Very nice, indeed. Sorry, Flex, we didn’t bring the camera this time. We’ll go back, I promise. *wink*
