What a lovely brunch. Today’s menu was Huevos Rancheros. I made a Spanish rice, herbed and seasoned black beans (granted, I cheated by using the canned beans as I hadn’t planned this event last night to pre-soak the raw ones), seasoned scrambled eggs, the salsa I made last night (with cilantro from my very own garden *beams proudly*), corn tortillas (which was nothing more than my savoury crêpe recipe with corn flour), lime crème (instead of sour cream), Monterey Jack cheese, first of the season red flame grapes and freshly brewed coffee. It took me about 2.5 hours to prep and make this meal, including a run to the grocer for some additional ingredients midway through the process (remember, I hadn’t prepared for this at all). When G woke, I pounced on him and asked what he wanted for his big Sunday brunch. I began to think of the possibilities and then recalled the fresh salsa in the fridge. That brought the strong desire for this meal. It’s one of those things that I reserve for the special Sunday brunch.

It’s rather sad, when I think about it. G and I usually don’t eat together. I wake 2-3 hours ahead of him, so I eat breakfast before he’s even out of bed. By the time he’s just finishing his breakfast, I’m either off doing my thing or I’m starting to think about lunch. We occasionally eat dinner together, but that’s only if I can tear him away from whatever he’s doing in his office. Usually, I eat dinner alone or we go out to eat. On Sundays, I put a little extra protein powder in my morning juice to last me until G wakes. Then I start the Big Brunch Project.

I’m excited about doing more French and Italian cooking this year. I am raising most of the plants involved in Herbes de Provence seasoning so I’ll have fresh, home grown versions. I also have most of the Italian seasonings I use in my pasta sauces. G indicated a desire for spaghetti Bolognese so I think I’ll soon make a big batch of sauce and then add the meat to half of it.

I’ve been so excited about my little garden. I’m halfway through a big book of herb gardening I bought. I’m really learning a lot. My big project for this afternoon is to sit on the deck and read more. Then I’ll prepare for my International night party by making French crêpes. I bought fresh strawberries and whipping cream. Yum. So, if anyone wants me, give me a ring as I’ll be out on my deck much of the afternoon… providing the clouds don’t open upon me in a deluge. They are looking rather ominous.
