Yesterday, George and I went shopping for a mattress. The Family had put two twin bed mattresses next to each other on the floor in preparation for our arrival. This has been great except that mattresses on a highly polished wooden floor tend to shift about. They never stay put together during the night so we end up with this gaping chasm between us. It kind of reminds me of the old 1960’s TV shows like The Mary Tyler Moore show that had them sleeping in twin beds near each other rather than a bed together. This is an acceptable arrangement on a temporary basis or if you have to worry about the wrath of TV censors, but it is a highly undesirable long-term solution to promote a happy marriage.

We found a queen mattress for a reasonable price (AU$900) and expect it to be delivered on Monday morning. It’s one of those pillow-top beds, firm but cushy, and very deep; the kind for which it is hard to buy fitted sheets.

So, one major purchase is out of the way. Next… we shall endeavour to buy a car. Since I haven’t been car shopping since 1988, I’m a little out of the loop on what is in the current market. I have a few items on my wish list for a car:
1. 5 doors. No matter what size the vehicle, a hatchback makes the car utilitarian. Very practical.
2. 2.2 litre, 4 cylinder engine. Anything less and the car can’t make it up a good hill or get me out of a dangerous intersection in time. Anything more and it seems less than economical.
3. Comfortable seats. I like to drive sitting as erectly as possible. Most car seats seem to only allow laid back lounge seating. I end up stuffing pillows and blankets on the seat just to support my back. This makes for very uncomfortable distance driving.

I don’t care about much else. These are the most important features in a car to me. Comfort and practicality. I don’t think that’s too much to want, but it’s difficult to achieve. We shall look at the local car dealers today.
