Because I love all my vicarious kitties, I thought I should post this. I read it in a magazine and I immediately wondered how many of us know this.

“Roughly 1.5 millions tons of clay are mined annually just to make kitty litter for the nation’s 60 million felines (U.S. Bureau of Mines). Much of the clay is strip mined, which destroys land and habitat, and some experts claim kitty litter accounts for more waste in landfills than disposable diapers (EarthShare.org). In addition, the silica dust in clay clumping litters may cause health problems in cats.
“Fortunately there are nontoxic, biodegradable, and renewable alternatives. Look for brands made from corn, wheat, nut shells, or recycled newspapers, including SwheatScoop, Feline Pine, and World’s Best Cat Litter.”

~~ from Natural Home Magazine, Jan/Feb 2005

Not only do the environmental implications alarm me, but the last line of the first paragraph concerns me greatly. I would hate to see any of my kitty friends have lung problems. I studied silicosis lung disease when I began taking pottery classes. It’s nasty. I also wonder how this effects the air in those homes for the humans as well.

Another really scary thing about the clumping litter is that turns to cement when it's wet. What that translates into here is that cat's lick the stuff off their paws and it turns to cement in their insides and they die. My friend lost a cat to clumping litter, they found the cement in his intestines when she had an autopsy performed.
