This week I have spent much of my time working on the house. Paoni arrived Tuesday night. We spent all day Wednesday shopping for essentials, a bike and all the accouterments (which we later installed), and sorting out her student ID and banking. Thursday morning, we brought her to her dorm and helped her settle in before her orientation.
Friday, I did a little shopping with
lurkitty and, G and Kyle. The whole gang met in front of the Digital Duck store on campus and we bought a MacBook. *gasp* Yes, it's true. I'm currently typing to you on an Apple product.
Here's how it went down. Eventually, I'll be going back to Sydney for a few months. When that happens, I'll need a computer. The laptop I had been using for business was the one we didn't chose when we were in Sydney last time. We had chosen a certain laptop and were going through a friend of G's sister who decided to give us whatever she had on hand rather than the one we had carefully chosen. What we got was a large laptop with not much hard drive. I was desperate enough to make it work. When we returned to the US, G bought himself his gamer boy laptop and I inherited the big one. Two weeks ago, the battery died in it. I haven't been using it at all. I was making plans to buy a new battery for it, but G spotted the MacBook on sale in the campus store when we were showing Paoni around the campus. He presented me the offer of going Mac. I was uncertain. I may not like Windows much, but it's familiar, all my software is meant for it, and there are lots of programs I'm not sure I can duplicate in Mac. Then, there is the tiny hard drive of the laptop I had that doesn't even hold all the business and personal programs I need to work, let alone the contents of my PDA or my iPod.
So, a delegation of Mac and Windows experts accompanied me to the store and we discussed all the possibilities. I am truly blessed to have so many great friends and the opportunity to have a stable computer that isn't going to blue-screen-of-death me every fortnight.
I'm currently involved in a sweeping learning curve. I'm confident I'll be an expert in a few weeks. Lurkitty even chose to stay with me last night until late, she gave up her planned concert attendance to help familiarize me with the new interface. *hugs*
So, here I am. On a Mac. With a PC desk top. Confusion is sure to abound.
