Okay, this is two mornings in a row. Breakfast complications. Complicated breakfasts.

The story:
I have oodles of fresh, local, organic fruit sitting on counters and in the fridge. I decided that cereal would be a wonderful way to incorporate the fruit into my breakfast world. I have my standard glass mug-bowl before me and a vast array of fruit arcing around it looking delicious. I put some blueberries in the bottom of the bowl. Then I slice a half a banana into the bowl. Next, a small peach, then some fresh blackberries that I just picked yesterday at Pisgah, I sprinkle some dried goji berries and some peanuts on top. I look at my bowl and realize there’s barely enough room for the hemp milk, never mind the cereal! And I have yet to address the cantaloupe! I decide the cantaloupe will just have to wait for another meal and stare at the bowl a bit longer contemplating my options. As it sits, I have a wonderful fruit bowl. That’s fine, but I signed up for cereal. Really, in order for cereal to be cereal, it really needs to contain CEREAL! With great determination, I carefully pour the milk over the mound of fruit and watch as it cascades through the spaces between the chunks and bits, carrying coloured juices in swirls that combine with the other colours. When I am within a few millimeters of the brim, I cease my pour, grab the bag of cereal and a spoon and sit at the table.

The solution was simple and elegant. Eat my creamy fruit bowl until there is enough room to pour some cereal on top and blend. The cereal was saved! Aho!

Really, my version of cereal is usually a poor excuse to just have a bowl of milky fruit with some bits of granola or cereal on top. I’ve just never before piled so much fruit in that I nearly jeopardized the very element that gives the dish its name. Catastrophe very nearly averted two mornings in a row. *phew*
